Newsweek ranks Leland among top high schools in the nation

Newsweek magazine has ranked Leland 54th in the nation in recognition of our high graduation rate, high level of college readiness and college attendance among our students. The ranking was calculated using various data points, including enrollment rate, graduation rate, state-level assessment scores, weighted AP/IB composite score, and weighted SAT/ACT composite score. National Merit Scholarships

The National Merit® Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. About 1.4 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. 300 Leland juniors took the PSAT last year. Of them, 26 qualified as National Merit SemiFinalists. These students will now apply for the Finalist round. Congratulations!

WASC Accreditation

The Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) has granted accreditation to Leland High School through June 30, 2020. This was the best possible outcome of our self-study report and the WASC committee's visit in March 2014. All Leland stakeholders, including staff, students, parents, and the community, played a critical role in earning this accreditation status. Congratulations! We will focus on our WASC Action Plan for the next six years. A mid-year report is due to WASC in 2017.

The PSAT will be offered at Leland on Wednesday, October 15th, within regular school hours. Following district policy, Leland will administer the PSAT this year to all sophomore students. The district will register and pay for all sophomores to take the PSAT. Sophomores do not need to register or pay for the test. Student room assignments will be posted the week of October 7th. On Tuesday, September 23rd during Tutorial, any Juniors who wish to take the PSAT need to go to the Cafeteria to register.
At the time of registration, Juniors will need to pay $15.00 for the PSAT in the Cafeteria with a check payable to Leland High School. Cash is also accepted. If a junior wants to be considered for the National Merit Program they need to take the PSAT on either 10/15/14 at Leland or 10/18/14 at another location. Due to space constraints, Leland can accommodate 300 juniors.
Juniors who need a fee waiver for the PSAT need to see the Academic Counseling Department (Brenda Stone, Sarah Diatta, Lisa Castillo, Teryn Kogura, or Joan Albers) by 9/23. Freshmen will not be allowed to take the PSAT. If a student takes the PSAT at another school, the student needs to go to the Career Center to obtain important information about what they need to bring on the day of the PSAT.
If you have any questions, please contact the Academic Counseling Department at extension 62246 or via email at Email
