California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Information and Opt Out Process

Each spring, schools across California participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress program, also known as CAASPP.

This year, your student will participate in the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts and mathematics (SBAC), the California Alternate Assessments (CAA), and, depending on their grade level, the pilot administration of the California Science Tests (CAST).

These assessments help school districts and the state monitor student progress under the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which support more rigorous instruction and increased expectations for students.

Pursuant to California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Section 852, each year school districts are required to notify parents or guardians of their pupil’s participation in the CAASPP tests. In addition, districts are required to inform families of their right to exempt their student from taking the CAASPP tests. For families wishing to exempt their student from a CAASPP assessment, a written request specifying the test(s) to be exempted must be submitted annually to the school site.

To learn more about the CAASPP assessments your student may take, or the exemption process, please click here.

Financial Support

Our financial support of the school is made possible through the generous contributions of parents during our “Build a Better Bret Harte” Donation Drive that starts at the beginning of the school year. Donations are accepted and welcome any time of the year, and for every $100 you donate your family will be entered into a monthly drawing for a $25 gift card of your choice (available gift cards are Costco, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target, Safeway, Kohls, Starbucks, and iTunes).  The sooner you donate the more chances you have to win. As an added bonus, if you donate before Friday, Sept. 30, your students will be entered into a drawing for lunch time pizza party with 5 of their friends.  If you’d like to make a donation please use the Membership Form. Forms are also available throughout the year in Student Services.
